Manufacture of a large cylindrical structure in industrial boilermaking

Manufacture of a large cylindrical structure in industrial boilermaking

Description

Making large metal structures calls for a combination of precision, experience and production capacity. In industrial boilermaking the challenge is not only forming the sheet, but making sure every part holds the dimensional tolerances needed for the finished assembly to be robust, functional and straightforward to install.

Cylindrical structures made from rolled sheet are used across very different sectors: water treatment, filtration, chemicals, special machinery, energy and process equipment. Manufacturing them involves sheet rolling, punching, structural welding and dimensional control, with each project adapted to the customer's specification.

The project

This project produced a cylindrical structure over 3 metres tall, built from several rolled steel sheets curved and welded together into a single structural body.

One of the sheets carried a punched pattern that formed part of the functional design of the assembly, showing how different manufacturing processes can be combined in the same part.

Because of the size of the structure, welding was carried out both from the outside and from inside the cylinder. The photographs of the process show the welder standing upright inside the structure, which gives a clear sense of the real scale of the project and of how demanding it was to make.

Aligning every shell course correctly, the quality of the weld beads and holding the cylindrical geometry were the decisive factors in the final result.

Applications

Making these structures to measure means they can be adapted fully to the technical requirements of each industrial application.

The main advantages are:
• Large-scale manufacturing with no standard-geometry limits.
• Openings, access hatches, flanges or structural reinforcements built in.
• High precision in rolling the sheet.
• Welding carried out to the requirements of the project.
• Available in carbon steel, stainless steel or other alloys.
• Compatible with later processes such as machining, painting or galvanising.
• Full compliance with drawings and technical specifications.

Work of this kind is common in industrial equipment, tanks, filters, machine housings, large ducting and other boilermaking assemblies.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum size you can make for a cylindrical structure?

It depends on the project and the processes involved, but large structures can be built by joining several rolled shell courses.

Which materials can be used?

Usually carbon steel, stainless steel and other materials, depending on the mechanical or environmental demands of the application.

Can different processes be combined in one part?

Yes. A single structure can bring together laser cutting, punching, rolling, bending, welding and machining.

How is precision guaranteed on a structure this size?

Through assembly jigs, dimensional checks throughout the process and final verification before delivery.

Do you only make one-off pieces?

No. We make prototypes as well as short runs and repeat production, adapting the process to what each customer needs.
